Russ Barenberg Masterclass : Program
In this masterclass I’d like to help you improve the way you practice so that everything you play starts to sound better and more musical. We’ll work on improving tone and timing; getting rid of “choppiness” and playing with more sustain and fluidity; understanding pick direction; playing with pulse and dynamics; learning melodies accurately and using them to generate strong solos. Fundamentally, this all means learning to listen in more detail to your own playing and to music in general.
I will also demonstrate some of my original tunes, explain what is involved in playing them, and depending on the level and background of students, possibly work with you on learning to play one of them.
Finally, I would welcome your questions about just about anything music-related: your playing, my playing, projects I’ve been involved with…anything you are curious about or that might help you musically.

Technical fundamentals of flatpicking
Improve your sound
Play more fluidly
Exercises for rhythm and pulse
Learn a tune
Melody-based soloing: building the ability to compose and improvise solos
Sunday 7 : Day 2
We will learn two of Russ's tunes, each illustrating a variety of topics:

More complex phrasing and pick direction
Syncopation
Left hand articulation techniques
Dynamics
Chords in Drop D tuning

Playing a slow melody beautifully
Fingering choices
Accompaniment with arpeggios
Harmony part
Melody-based soloing: building the ability to compose and improvise solos
Saturday for all levels, though you should have experience playing the guitar, both chords and at some melody.
Sunday the material will geared toward intermediate and advanced guitar players, but others are certainly welcome to come, including players of other instruments interested in the music.
